2 Keep a diary of school life

3 Tips for Your Teaching

1. Teaching Plan You should complete your master plan for the whole lesson, and a sub plan for each classes you will teach. For the sub plans, you should submit it before at least 2 days to your adviser to be checked and revised if needed.

2. Using authentic materials • To get students’ attention effectively, one thing you can use is to use 1 or 2 minutes of video clips that are related to the topics you will teach. You will find that students really like watching video clips. • Search good sources at You. Tube, and then it might be convenient for you download it using a program called “Youtube downloader”, which you can find easily at any search engines. • When you teach vocabulary, it is very effective that you use some pictures which are related to the words.

3. Classroom arrangement • For you to do some group activities in the classroom, you should check the number of students of each classroom in advance. Every class has different number of members, so you need to check it to properly divide the groups • There are some classes which rearrangement of the desks for group activity is impossible, especially in high schools. In this case, you should think of an alternative way to make groups for the activity.

4. Classroom English • In most high schools or middle schools, students’ English competence is lower than you expect. So use words and expressions which are as easy as possible and speak them as slowly as you can. • In some schools, you are allowed to speak in Korean in English class. However, it is sure that you use English at the English classes. Please speak in English both for your improvement of English teaching skills and your students.

5. Using Textbooks • Even though you may have some activities and materials you really want to use when you teach, in most cases you are required to use textbooks because there are fixed range students need to learn in the semester. • In spite of this limitations, you can try various activities based on the textbook contents. Do not necessarily try to make completely new activities. Sometimes, think of some ways to best utilize exercises in the textbook and adapt them as the way your lesson please. This will not only good for your teaching experience, but also your adviser will like it.

6. Back-up plan • As a novice teacher, it is very difficult to manage the time when you teach because the situations and atmosphere varies among different classrooms. • Therefore, you always need to prepare back-up plan in case 5 or 10 minutes are left in the class. You cannot let the time just go doing nothing. • For example, in my case, I taught students some fun expressions or let them watch the speech of Kim Yuna, the famous Korean figure skater, to motivate their English learning.
