TANKA POEMS • A form of Japanese poetry • Well over 1200 years old • Consists of 31 syllables (5 lines - 5, 7, 7) • The themes for tanka poems are love, friendships, nature and seasons.

CLASS TANKA CONSTRUCTION • Choose a topic that fits into love, friendship, nature or the seasons. • As a class, contribute ideas to create your own tanka poem on the chosen topic, following the syllable structure of 5, 7, 7

JOINT CONSTRUCTION OF TANKA POEM • Write at least 1 tanka poem on a different topic to your haiku poem last week and the class poem just written. • Make sure that the syllable structure is correct before showing your teacher. • If complete and accurate, write your own tanka poem.

CINQUAIN POEMS • Pronounced sin-cane • Do not have a title – the first word usually announces the topic • 5 lines, each line with a set number of syllables • First line – 2 syllables, second line – 4 syllables, third line – 6 syllables, fourth line – 8 syllables, final line – 2 syllables.
