Take out a blank piece of paper and label it “Inclined Plane-Wedge. Screw Notes” Answer the following question using page 110 in the book. 1. What is an inclined plane?
Cut out triangles A, B and C from the paper. Be careful to leave the dark lines on each triangle. Write your name or initials on each triangle. Lay out the triangles on the table so you can see and correctly read the letters “A”, “B” and “C” in the lower right corner of each triangle.
Pretend the darkest line is a ramp. 2. Which ramp allows you to do the greatest amount of work? 3. Which ramp would take the least amount of force to go up? the most amount of force to go up? 4. If you need less force, you will have to travel a ____ distance.
Here you can see that work (the height of the left side of each triangle) is the same for all three ramps!

Ramp C would take the least amount of force, but the greatest distance!
Ramp A would take the greatest amount of force, but the least amount of distance!

Borrow a same letter triangle from a neighbor and put the two triangles back -to-back with the 90 degree (right angle) corners together.
5. What have you created? Record the definition from page 111 and give an example.
Take a triangle and wrap it around a pencil following the directions on the triangle. Put a small piece of tape on the letter. Then slide the tube off the pencil. Repeat this process with remaining triangles.
Lay the three tubes side by side on the table so that you can see the dark line and the letters A, B and C.
While looking at the 3 tubes… 6. Tell how the tubes are alike. 7. Tell how the tubes are different.
Answer the following question using page 111 8. Describe how a screw is an inclined plane.
