Pandas A panda has a very distinctive appearance. Pandas are the national animal of China. They are related to bears and are known for their black eye patches and their sensitive diet. There are two different types of panda, the giant panda is the most well known one but the red panda also lives in the mountains in China. The red panda looks like a raccoon with a long tail and is the same size as a cat. The giant panda is much bigger and has black and white fur. Both the red and giant pandas are excellent at climbing and have long sharp claws that can also be used for stripping bamboo. Pandas are very fussy eaters. Most pandas only eat bamboo, a type of grass that grows in the mountainous areas of China. To get enough energy from the bamboo they eat, an adult panda will eat up to half a ton of bamboo a day. That is over half the weight of their body!
