Start , Stop and Continue It is a good practice to apply SSC to Scouting activities. Whether training or a recent campout , the important aspect of SSC is to record specific timely team feedback and take action to impact future events or activities projects. Recording AND referring to SSC for future reference to assure application to future activities or events or projects is essential. What should we *start doing that we are not currently doing in the training? What do we *stop doing that is not working? What should we *continue doing that is working well and helps us succeed? *Start , Stop , Continue = Good , Bad , Ugly

Start, Stop and Continue Start Doing – Be positive actions which are not yet happening v What should we start doing to improve? v Any new behaviors, activities or directions to make? v What should we do next to continue getting better? v Was there anything we could to that would make things more fun or useful? Stop Doing – actions that are keeping the group from being their best; v What are doing that is preventing us from bing as successful as possible? v Do we have bad habits or behaviors that we need to stop? v What didn’t work in this activity? v Was there something that make it not fun?

Start, Stop, Continue – v Should can be used to reflect after any activity, campout, meeting, or event? v It is a good way to promote continue improvement in the troop or patrol.

Many ways for SSC v Formal : a. Scoutmaster conferences – are reflections as a Scoutmaster guides a boy in exploring the meaning of his completion of advancement requirements. b. Board of Review (BOR) c. Scoutmaster Minutes – Provide one-on-one feed back d. Troop events v Informal : a. End of an activity – Scouts can see how well things went and how we can improve. Giving each participant a chance to voice what he liked and did not like about the event. b. In the middle of an event – If Scouts are struggling to solve a problem or need to stop and work through a disagreement. c. SSC can be spontaneous – Anytime and Anywhere, (during a campfire, under a tree, during the Troop interpatrol games, etc. )

A few pointers for leaders in SSC: v Thank about the kinds of questions You will use during a SSC following an activity. v Have Scouts sit down so they can see each other. v Establish Rules not to interrupt on another or not to make fun of each other, keep silent is ok. v Reserve your judgment about what the boys are saying Otherwise, it will shut down their sharing. v Guide the discussion but don’t dominate it.

A few pointers for leaders (Cont’d) v Remind everyone that the environment of Scouting is a “putdown free zone”—we want to build up others, not put them down. v Make positive comments and give positive encouragement – to determine the value of the experience they just had, focusing first on positive aspects v Generalize the experience – a goal of reflection is to help Scouts make the connection between the activity they have just completed and regular troop experiences v Steer Scouts toward setting goals - based on what they have learned about their recent experience.
