St. David is the patron saint of Wales. He was born many years ago: around 520 A. D.
When David was a boy he loved to listen to the monks telling stories about Jesus.
David was born a king’s son. His father was Sant: King of Ceredigion. His mother’s name was Non.
David was special. A white dove always followed David and stayed near him.
David was taught by monks. As he got older he went to study with a monk called Paulinus.
Paulinus was going blind. One day David lifted his hand up to Paulinus’ eyes. When David took his hand away Paulinus could see!
David left Paulinus to travel around Britain. He wanted to tell people about Jesus.
Eventually, David returned to Wales. He wanted to build a monastery in Glyn Rhosyn. Unfortunately, a fierce prince, called Boie did not want it to happen.
Boie sent his warriors to stop David. But God protected David and the warriors let him be.
David built his monastery. He grew vegetables and helped the people around him.
A very famous story is told about St. David. He was preaching to a crowd in a place called Brefi when something amazing happened.
People wanted to see and hear David but it was very crowded. Suddenly the ground rose up and everyone could see David. Then God made David’s voice ring like a trumpet so all could hear.
St. David lived a good life. He died on March 1 st in about 589 A. D. He was a special man to all Welsh people.
St. David’s Cathedral in Pembrokeshire is built on the site of St David’s monastery.
