Recap 1. Horizontal axis is called the X axis 2. Vertical axis is called the Y-axis Y axis. 3. X axis and Y axis are called coordinate axes. 4. Ordered pair is written in bracket with X coordinate and Y coordinate inside 5. Origin point is ( 0 , 0 ) origin X-axis

The Cartesian Plane is divided into four quadrants. II I III IV

Quadrant II The X coordinate is negative and Y coordinate is positive (-, +)

Quadrant II The X coordinate is negative and Y coordinate is positive (-, +) Eg: ( -2 , 8 ) , ( -1 , 4 ) Quadrant III The X coordinate and Y coordinates are negative (-, -) Eg: ( -2 , -3 ) , ( -7 , -4 ) Quadrant I The X coordinate and Y coordinates are positive (+, +) Eg: ( 5 , 6 ) , ( 10 , 4 ) Quadrant IV The X coordinate is positive and Y coordinate is negative (+, -) Eg: ( 1 , -7 ) , ( 4 , -2 )

Look at the following points on the coordinate plane. ( 5 , 0 )

Look at the following points on the coordinate plane. ( 5 , 0 ) , ( 0 , 6 ) , ( -7 , 0 ) , ( 0 , -3 ) 1. If any coordinates Is 0 then the points lie on the axes and not in the quadrants. 2. If X = 0 then the coordinate (0 , a ) lies on Y axis 3. If Y = 0 then the coordinate (a , 0 ) lies on X axis ( 0 , 6 ) lies on Y axis ( -7 , 0 ) lies on X axis ( 0 , -3 ) lies on Y axis ( 5 , 0 ) lies on X axis

Example 1 : Without using graph identify the quadrant of ( 4 , 11

Example 1 : Without using graph identify the quadrant of ( 4 , 11 ) Solution : In the coordinate ( 4 , 11 ) X coordinate = 4 Y coordinate = 11 Since both coordinates are positive ( + , + ) This point lies in Quadrant I

Example 2 : Without using graph identify the quadrant of ( - 16 ,

Example 2 : Without using graph identify the quadrant of ( - 16 , - 81 ) Solution : In the coordinate ( - 16 , - 81 ) X coordinate = -16 Y coordinate = - 81 Since both coordinates are negative ( - , - ) This point lies in Quadrant III

Example 3 : Without using graph identify the quadrant of ( 0 , -

Example 3 : Without using graph identify the quadrant of ( 0 , - 23 ) Solution : In the coordinate ( 0 , - 23 ) X coordinate = 0 Y coordinate = - 23 Since the X coordinate is 0. This point does not lie in any quadrant. It simply lies on Y axis
