Parts of FDP Retainers 2. Pontic 3. Connectors 1.
Connector Pontic Retainer Abutment Preparation Abutment Edentulous Ridge
Retainer A part of FDP which unites the abutments to the remainder of the restoration (GPT 8 -2005) Abutment: A tooth, a portion of a tooth, or that portion of a dental implant that serves to support and/or retain a prosthesis.
Types of Retainers Major retainers • FVC, PVC Minor retainers • Inlay, onlay Conservative retainers Telescopic retainers All metal, Metal Ceramic, All ceramic, All acrylic retainers
Pontic: An artificial tooth on a FDP that replaces a missing tooth, restores function and usually fills the space previously filled by a natural crown (GPT 8 -2005).
Ideal Pontic Biologic • Can maintain healthy tissues • Cleansable Mechanical • Strong enough to withstand functional forces • Rigid & resistant to deformation • Provides normal function Esthetic • Looks like the tooth it replaces • Tissue contacts appear as normal tooth
Types of Pontics/ Classification With mucosal contact • • • Saddle pontic Ridge lap pontic Modified ridge lap pontic Ovate pontic Bullet shaped/ conical/ heart shaped/dome shape pontic Without mucosal contact • Sanitary/hygienic pontic
Saddle Pontic Overlaps the ridge Most natural feeling Most difficult to clean Used for • Limited occlusal-gingival space • Patients who object to lingual space
Ridge Lap Pontic Resembles natural tooth Like saddle on buccal Convex on the lingual Forms a large concave contact with ridge Non-cleansable Tissue inflammation Do not use
Modified Ridge Lap Aesthetic Convex tissue surface Used routinely in aesthetic zone Contacts tissue only on most facial surface of the pontic Most cleansable Least tissue irritation Space between pontic and tissue on lingual can be unacceptable to some patient
Conical Rounded and cleansable Triangular embrasures may trap debris Suited for thin mandibular ridges Non-esthetic regions
Ovate Highly aesthetic Bluntly rounded pontic tip set into concavity in the ridge Pontic appears to be “growing” from ridge Difficulty in cleaning Potential for tissue irritation
Hygienic No contact with ridge Most cleansable Used in non-aesthetic areas Used primarily in posterior regions Convex in all directions O-G thickness no less than 3 mm Amount of space under 1 - 1. 5 mm
Connectors: The portion of FDP that unites the retainers and pontics (GPT 8 -2005).
Types of Connectors Rigid Connectors a cast, soldered, or fused union between the retainer and pontic (GPT-8 -2005)
Non Rigid Connectors any connector that permits limited movement between otherwise independent members of a fixed dental prosthesis (GPT-8 -2005) • • Tenon- Mortise Connectors Loop Connectors Split Pontic Connectors Cross Pin and Wing connectors
