Organizing Students to Practice and Deepen Knowledge Design Question 3 – Element 15: How do teachers organize students so they can practice and deepen their knowledge while in small groups?

Before we begin… Before we begin talking about element 15, let’s be sure that there is an understanding about how the elements in Design Question 3 are related. How does the purpose of Design Question 3 differ with Design Question 2? You should have noticed that • the purpose of Design Question 2 is to introduce new material to students while • the purpose of Design Question 3 is to give the students an opportunity to practice using material that was previously taught so that they deepen their understanding; therefore, • teachers have to perform Design Question 2 before Design Question 3. Now let’s talk about element 15, specifically.

Desired Effect in the Students The desired effect is, “Students practice and deepen knowledge by interacting in small groups. ” To receive an Innovating rating, the teacher must monitor and make accommodations so that every student in their classroom achieves this desired effect. In other words, every student must have the opportunity to interact with other students in small groups while deepening their knowledge or practicing their something they know.

How to Rate Teacher Evidence You can only give credit for what you see. Teacher Evidence • While in groups, the students interact in specific ways • The teacher asks the students to work with partners to discuss the texture and smell of fabrics, matching them up with a partner.

Student Evidence While in groups, the students interact in explicit ways to deepen their knowledge of informational content, or practice a skill, strategy, or process. • The students talked with their partner to express their opinions about the fabrics and confer with their partner as to their opinions.

How we Rated the Teacher We rated the teacher as APPLYING. She organized the students into groups to practice and deepen their knowledge and monitored for evidence of the extent to which the group work extends the majority of students’ learning. The teacher was seen circulating throughout the room, observing the students as they worked. She engaged in conversation with some of the groups. This teacher may have been Innovating, but there was not evidence of this seen on the video. Luckily, your evaluator will be able to see everything that happens in your classroom as well as interview students.
