Steps of the cycle Nitrogen Fixation. Converts Nitrogen from the atmosphere. Biotic processes convert the nitrogen to ammonia whereas abiotic processes convert nitrogen to nitrate. Needs to happen before plants can use it to grow. Assimilation. Producers take up either ammonium or nitrate. Consumers assimilate nitrogen by eating producers.

Steps of the cycle (continued) Ammonification. Decomposers in soil and water break down biological nitrogen compounds into ammonium. Nitrification. Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonium into nitrite and then into nitrate. Denitrification. In a series of steps, denitrifying bacteria in oxygen- poor soil and stagnant water convert nitrate into nitrous oxide and eventually nitrogen gas.

Human Impact on the Nitrogen Cycle Humans impact the Nitrogen Cycle in four ways:

Human Impact on the Nitrogen Cycle Humans impact the Nitrogen Cycle in four ways: Nitrogen Fertilization, Deforestation, Fossil Burning, and Human Population Growth. Nitrogen Fertilization: Humans produce approximately 80 terra grams of nitrogen fertilizer per year. All of this nitrogen is added into the ecosystems of the world and is by far the largest human contribution of new nitrogen to the global cycle. Deforestation: Forest have the capacity to retain Nitrogen. Therefore, when trees are cut, it decreases the forest capacity and increases the amount of nitrogen projected into the wetlands and in the air. Fossil Burning: Automobiles, factories, power plants and other combustion processes that were stored in geological forms are sent back into the atmosphere by human actions which increase the amount of Nitrogen and affect the Nitrogen Cycle. Production of 20 Tg per year in the Atmosphere. Human Population Growth: The growth of the human population makes the amount of nitrogen increase because more and more people are continuing to live unsustainably. More people cutting down trees, more people affecting the quality of the lake, etc.

Human Dependence on the cycle The Nitrogen Cycle is important because all organisms require nitrogen in order to live. If an organism receives too much, or not enough nitrogen, the organism will be seriously affected; it will lack capabilities to reproduce and grow effectively. The atmosphere is also crucial to human life, trapping air and materials needed to survive, and nitrogen makes up the majority of the atmosphere.

Facts Animals use nitrogen when eating plants or eating animals that eat plants; plants absorb nitrogen from the soil. Nitrogen(N 2) is a very strong bond, but can be broken by lightning, and the free nitrogen atoms can bond with O 2 Roughly 78% of the atmosphere is made of a non-usable form of nitrogen gas. When you breath in air, 78% of that is nitrogen! ONLY 21% is oxygen! Too much nitrous oxide in the atmosphere can cause acid rain.

conclusion Nitrogen is an element that is vital for all life on Earth. The nitrogen cycle describes how nitrogen moves through different objects, both in the atmosphere and the ground. Because nitrogen must be fixed in order to be used by living things, it rarely exists in its pure form. If humans abuse the Nitrogen cycle the earth could have excess Nitrogen, or perhaps not enough N 2 to live sufficiently. In order to ensure that the Cycle can continue naturally, humans need to keep our environment clean and reduce pollution, deforestation, and start living sustainably!
