CHARACTER 3
Being a Good Teammate 1) A great teammate gives relentless effort: Remember, your coach should not have to coach effort! You cannot control many things that will happen during your season, but you can control how hard you play. The only way to get better is to give your maximum effort. This not only makes you better, it pushes your teammates to get better as well. 2) A great teammate is unselfish: Put the team first. Your job is to do what it takes to help the team be successful. This isn’t always easy, but great teammates find a way to put the success of the team above their own success. 3) A great teammate is honest: All great teams and relationships are built on honesty. Your coach and teammates need to know that they can trust you during the ups and downs of a season. 4) A great teammate is humble: You may be the star of your team or you may be a role player, either way, remember that the team comes first. Put your individual accomplishments aside and give praise to your teammates. Teams succeed when no one cares who gets the credit. 4
Being a Good Teammate Cont: 5) A great teammate holds themselves and their teammates accountable: You should have high standards for yourself and your teammates. If a teammate is not fulfilling duty to the team you can’t be afraid to confront them and get them back on track. You might need to help them buy in to a particular strategy or help them accept their role on the team. Don’t accept a negative attitude from teammates, be the player that reaches out to them to help your team as a whole. 6) A great teammate strives to improve: You can always be a better player tomorrow than you are today. Work to improve your game and you will lift your teammates. 7) A great teammate is optimistic: Don’t be a player constantly complaining to others about what’s wrong. Look for the positives in your teammates and coaches 8) A great teammate has respect for others: Respect your teammates. Respect your coaches. Respect your family, Respect your teachers. Respect your facilities. Respect your school. Look people in the eye. Nod and acknowledge your coach when they are addressing you. Clean up after yourself. Be polite. Encourage and cheer on your teammates. Help create a culture of mutual respect. 5
Being a Good Teammate Cont: 9) A great teammate is a leader: You don’t have to be the best player on your team to be a leader. You don’t even need to be a vocal leader. Every player can lead by their actions. Is what you do on a daily basis making your team better? Challenge your teammates during drills. You’ll improve and so will they. Bring energy to every practice. Don’t talk bad about teammates or coaches outside the team environment. These are all ways you can lead your teammates towards success 10) A great teammate is resilient: Help your team use temporary setbacks or losses as an opportunity to grow and improve. Don’t make excuses, look for solutions. As a mentally tough basketball player, pride yourself on being resilient. Your ability to bounce back will be infectious and help make your entire team more resilient. In any situation, one player’s positive outlook can make a difference. Try to be that player. 6
Being a Good Teammate Cont: 11) A great teammate helps foster a family atmosphere: Support your teammates like family. Your season is going to have highs and lows, so are your teammates. Teams that build close relationships are usually the teams having the most fun and having the most success. 12) A great teammate takes responsibility: All of your actions, within and away from the team, are a representation of your team, your school or organization, and your family. Take responsibility for your behavior and actions at all times. Conduct yourself in such a way that your parents, coaches, and teachers would be proud of you. You never know who is looking at you for cues on how to behave. 7

TEAMSNAP • We are slowly adding Teamsnap for HS Sports. Schedules will be copied over from the sports website and it will be the main source of communication for each team. This should be fully operational for the 2020 -2021 school year. • It allows for open and transparent communication between coaches, players and parents. Everyone can see the communication. • Another source for schedules and quick notifications or alerts • www. ciceroprepathletics. com will remain as your main source for full Cicero athletics information. 13
Tax Credits • The Arizona Public School Tax allows Arizona taxpayers to contribute $200 (filing single) or $400 (filing jointly) to Cicero Prep and receive that contribution back as a dollar-for-dollar credit on their state tax liability. This means Cicero Prep families and friends can support our school at no net cost to them! If the contribution is made before April 15 you can also write it off on your federal taxes. Tax Credits to Cicero Prep are vital to the success of our athletic program. These financial contributions comprise the majority of our department’s budget. • Tax Credits AND Registration Fees are needed to support all the Cicero Prep Athletic Programs. Tax credits may not be used in lieu of paying the Registration Fees. *If you child is playing a sport at CP, and you have not submitted a tax credit form to the school, you should speak to the Athletic Director* $80, 900 is our budget goal 14
Spring Coaches • Colton Sattler – HS Track & Field Head Coach • Tim Edwards – HS Track & Field Assistant Coach • Gary Sattler – MS Track & Field Head Coach • Catrina Warren – MS Girls Basketball A Team Head Coach • Ian Alexander – MS Boys Basketball A Team Head Coach • Jon Sutton– MS Boys Basketball B Team Head Coach • Billy Hunt – MS Boys Basketball C Team Head Coach • Eusebio Sarabia – MS/HS Tennis Head Coach • Steve Barber – MS Swim & Dive Head Coach 15
Coaching Philosophy • Each coach is unique and views a sport different, it would be unfair to compare coaches and how they coach- Trust, communicate and work with your coaches • Coaches availabilities vary – What I can provide in time and dedication, including offseason is different than what Coach Warren or Coach Barber can do, and Coach Sattler and Coach Sutton are different from the both of us. Some coaches have full time jobs, others have young kids, others travel for the summer, etc. Its important that we respect our coaches time and understand what they can commit too. It does not mean one sport is more important than another. • HS Playing Time • We are playing at a competitive level and we are striving to win, the best players will get the majority of playing time. When available coaches should try to get playing time to other players as real game time is the best course of learning. But its not required and some players may not get in a game. • Growing program means more teams and not everyone makes Varsity • MS Playing Time • A Team 90/10 • B Team 80/20 – 70/30 • C Team 50/50 (ideally) 16
Positive Coaching Alliance • Great Hearts has a relationship with PCA • Cicero has a bigger relationship – Rich Tomey • PCA has a lot of the same values as Great Hearts • PCA Character outreach is similar to my program beliefs • Working with PCA for our Spring season- Will be uploaded to the schedules 17
Communication Expectations • I am easily accessible – Know Limits • Open door policy- but understand I may need time to get back to you • Its about the kids- its why I am here (its your program-I just guide the ship) • HS Athletes vs MS Athletes – They take the lead in communication and knowing what's happening • Follow the Protocol • • • Coach/Athlete/Parent AD/Coach/Athlete/Parent/Headmaster 18
Program Growth • Year one was good, just a learning year figuring what works, what does not • Building our foundation – (New Handbook) Must read it! • Get our teams to success- Size choice with AIA (1 A Program starting next year) • Grow our outreach • Grow our program • Provide our teams opportunities • Understanding the balance between sports and income generation of said sports 19
