OBJECTIVE • The purpose of this course is to provide opportunities to study the fundamentals of physics, chemistry, and energy. • Math skills will be called upon as force, motion, and energy are investigated. • The properties of matter, atomic structure, and chemical reactions allow the student to acquire an understanding of the world around them at a microscopic level. • Energy, heat, and waves will be discussed as the student learns how these are formed and the features that characterize them. • The class also incorporates topics concerning the physical processes on earth, and the motions, characteristics, and forces in space. • Students will examine physical science through research, class discussion, lab activities, computer projects, small group activities, case studies, and/or projects. • The curriculum for this course will aim toward mastering the current FCAT Benchmarks for physical science while also incorporating the common core standards in literacy, writing and math. State Assessment: 8 th grade Science FCAT

WHAT IS STANDARD BASED GRADING • Standard based grading means your child’s knowledge will be compared against the Florida State Standards for each course. • The standards for each course can be found on CPALMS along with what concepts they need to be able to explain to demonstrate mastery. • Based on the information the child provides for each standard, they will be graded. Certain assignments that develop the knowledge of the standard can be resubmitted for grade improvement while formative and summative submissions cannot.

WHAT IS STANDARD BASED GRADING Homework, classwork, and lab work (as designated in pinnacle)

WHAT IS STANDARD BASED GRADING Homework, classwork, and lab work (as designated in pinnacle) is accepted late without penalty. Students will be allowed to re-do this work under the following conditions: • work is submitted by the initial due date • only the questions that were completed by the initial due date can be resubmitted for grade improvement • Re-do assignments need to be resubmitted by designated new due date or before the summative assessment (whichever date comes first). • The assignment is not a summative submission However, every effort should be made to turn work in on time so as not to become overwhelmed and fall behind.
