GIFTS What is GIFTS? • Geosynchronous Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS) • 32, 600 sensors to collect data, scanning an area of 512 kilometers square every ten seconds (~3000 Channels)!! – 60 Mb/sec - X-band • Joint NASA, NOAA, US Navy, SSEC/University of Wisconsin-Madison, Space Dynamics Laboratory/Utah State University Status • NASA – Descoping NMP EO-3 • NOAA – still funding R&D for GOES-R HES • Navy – Continuing GIFTS partnership despite lack of spacecraft funding • Instrument may still be built regardless – may yet have a future (Proposal submitted)

MGS Science Workshop: Recommendations 1. Communications 1. 2. Internet Improvements needed Short-, Mid-, Long-term solutions suggested Pat Smith 2. Science and Operational Requirements 1. 2. 3. 4. Short-, Mid-, Long-term implementation Multi-discipline benefits Recommend the installation of a stand-alone direct readout reception station for science and operational use by the United States Antarctic Program and its partners. Recommend the processing and use of direct broadcast data be required/possible both on site at Mc. Murdo Station as well as off site. 3. Limiting Factors 4. There is more…. report will be available in July.
