I. The Rechabites (35: 1 -11) • Going back to the days of Jehoiakim (1) • Jeremiah told to invite the Rechabites into the temple to drink wine. (2 -5)

Who are the Rechabites? Those are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab. 1 Chronicles 2: 55 The descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up from the city of palms with the sons of Judah, to the wilderness of Judah which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people. Judges 1: 16 Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, from the sons of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far away as the oak in Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh. Descendants of Moses’ father-in-law who Judges 4: 11 lived (in tents) among the people of Israel.

Who are the Rechabites? Now when [Jehu] had departed from there, he met Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him; and he greeted him and said to him, “Is your heart right, as my heart is with your heart? ” And Jehonadab answered, “It is. ” Jehu said, “If it is, give me your hand. ” And he gave him his hand, and he took him up to him into the chariot. He said, “Come with me and see my zeal for the LORD. ” So he made him ride in his chariot. When he came to Samaria, he killed all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, until he had destroyed him, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke to Elijah. 2 Kings 10: 15 -17 Descendants of Jonadab, a man zealous for righteousness.

(2 -5) • Rechabites refuse because their ancestor, Jonadab passed down these rules: (6 -9) • You shall not drink wine. • You shall not build a house. • You shall not sow seed or plant vineyards. • You shall live in tents. • They had obeyed these rules. (10 -11)

II. The Contrast (35: 12 -19) • A stark contrast: (12 -17) The Rechabites: Command of a man Command given one time No promise of blessing They obeyed faithfully A hopeful future The Judah-ites: Command of God Repeated by prophets Promise of blessing They refuse to obey A dismal future • Because of faithfulness to their father’s command, God blesses the Rechabites with a perpetual family line. (18 -19)
