ISTE Standards for teachers

What is ISTE? • The ISTE standards for teachers outline a very important set of goals to inspire students through technology and promoting engaging classrooms that facilitate student learning and creativity, design and develop digital-age learning and assessments, digital citizenship and professional growth and leadership. These standards can be implemented in every class for any age. Technology can give any teacher the tools for an active collaborating classroom that is participating in learning experiences as individuals or in a group.

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity • Teachers use face-to-face and visual enviornments to support their knowledge of the subject matter and use technology to facilitate a classroom that advance learning with students through creativity and innovation. I rate myself an 9/10 on this standard, but would love to know more.

2. Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments • Teachers use learning experiences and assessments that incorporate contemporary resources and tools to expand content learning and understanding to develop skills, knowledge and attitudes. I rate myself a 5/10 on this standard because I think I have a lot more to learn.

3. Model Digital Age Work and Learning • Teachers will showcase their knowledge, work process and skills to represent the professional, innovative, global and digital society. Teachers must also display their fluency in technology learning systems. I rate myself a 6/10 and am looking forward to improving my fluency in technology.

4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility • Teachers will understand model global and local issues involving digital culture and will exhibit and practice ethical and professional use of digital information and technology including such things as copyright. I rate myself an 8/10 because I understand the ethical procedures using digital tools.

5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership • Teachers will be life long learners and will keep up and improve their professional practice and show leadership in using digital tools and resources. Teachers must participate in learning communities to improve student learning. I rate myself an 9/10 on this standard because I love to learn and improve myself.

How can I use the INSTE standards? • I can use these standards as a guideline for lesson plans. With every day classrooms and lectures you can begin to implement activities with digital tools. I look forward to the excitement of creating a ‘Kahoot’ game to prepare for an upcoming test instead of handing out a study guide. These tools provide a chance to interact with the students in an active way which helps to engrain the information we have studied together as a class. My personal knowledge of these standards is basic, but I am enthusiastic to learn what tools are out there that I don’t know of. Are there any digital tools that you can recommend? Any
