WHY DO PEOPLE WEAR MASKS? PROTECTION • Especially today, masks are commonly seen as a form of protection from catching or spreading infections. However, this isn’t the first time that people have used face coverings for protective purposes. • In the 1600 s, the Black Death (the plague) also led people to wear masks for protection. Sometimes they have away for the wearer to hold the mask up to their face instead of strapping it around their head. • They also use a range of different materials to make the mask (such as lace) in addition to the metallic and gem effects. YOUR TASK Using the different images from the previous slide (and your own research if you can), design your own masquerade mask that could be worn to the Yule Ball. Think about the patterns, materials and any additional features that you might want to include on your design and annotate your design to show what you would use. Once you have completed your design, email an image of your work to tlayear 6@thesharedlearningtrust. org. uk
