Writing Teaching Point: Discovering small moments that matter • Good writers start their stories with a bang! • Click on the video to listen to how Jane Yolen begins the book, Owl Moon. • Think of your own small moment that could be turned into a story. • Then think about how you can begin your story to capture the interest of readers.

Mentor Sentence Teaching Point: I can capitalize names of people, places, and things. Mr. Hartwell handed Sarah a piece of toast and her lunchbox. What do you notice in the sentence? Proper nouns are names of people, places, and things. Can you think of some proper nouns?

Math • Number Talk/Word Problem of the Day • There are different ways to write a number. • • Standard form Base Ten Blocks Place Value Expanded Form Teaching Point: I can write a number in word form. • We can also write numbers in word form. • Two hundred fifty-four • Six hundred twelve • Practice on your own. Write the numbers given by the teacher in word form in your math notebook or on your whiteboard. • Use the cheat sheet in your KC bag to spell the number words correctly.

Social Studies Let’s Review where we live! • I live in a house (address). • My house is in a city, Marietta. • I live in Cobb County. • My city is in my state, Georgia. • My state is in my country, the United States of America. • My country is in my continent, North America. Teaching Point: I can describe where I live. We are going to make a book to help us review where we live. Cut out the circles on the pages found in the Social Studies bag in your KC bag. We will make this together in our live session. You will need scissors and a pencil as well as some colors.

Independent Work Time/Small Groups What do I do when I’m not meeting with a teacher? • Read independently to build stamina! Use the reading log and stamina chart in your KC bag. Make it a goal to read for 20 minutes every day! • Clever • Work on your small moments story in your writing journal. • Write down nouns that you see in your reading books! • Practice writing the following numbers in different ways in your math journal: 531, 285, 129, 316, 708. • Standard form, base ten blocks, place value, expanded form, word form • Practice writing your address!

For your parents… • Please join us on Tuesday, August 25 at 10: 30 to help your child complete the Math SKI assessment. This is not a grade, but is important for students to do their best! We need adults to help students click on the correct icons as we proceed through the assessment together as a class. • Parent information night is Wednesday, September 2 at 6 pm.
