You will silently read the story. I want you to interpret the characters in the story without any interference from other students in the classroom. Reading a piece of text independently allows you to use preferred methods of visualization, skimming, or annotating to comprehend the literature. This is a “first read” in my classroom. Use those traits along with their motives to understand why they act the way they do. After you read the story, choose a character (Cheryl, Martin, and Grandpa) to analyze.
