Human Rights Project Your Task: The International Criminal Court (“the ICC” or “the Court”)

Human Rights Project Your Task: The International Criminal Court (“the ICC” or “the Court”) is a permanent international court established to investigate, prosecute and try individuals accused of committing the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole, namely the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression. President Trump has nominated you to act as an ICC prosecutor and represent the United States. Your task is to select one human rights violation to research and present your findings to the court for consideration. You will be expected to provide a comprehensive background of the violation, evidence of wrongdoings and how it was eventually resolved.

Human Rights Project Afterwards, the court (your classmates) will decide if a human rights violation occurred and whether the resolution was appropriate. In some cases, it can be argued that the punishment was too harsh while in other circumstances individuals were not sufficiently held accountable for their actions. In cases where the committee disagrees with the resolution, they will be expected to voice their recommendations for a more just punishment. Please remember that the court (your classmates) may not be familiar with the specifics of your human rights violation therefore it is important that you “teach” it to them so that they can reach the best decision possible.
