Features of Instructions Let’s have a look at some instructions. Can you find any features as we read them and remember what they are for? Click on the coloured boxes to check your ideas. Title – this gives us a clue to what the instructions are about. Introduction – this tells us more about the product that these instructions help us to make.

Features of Instructions List of equipment with photographs. Photo or diagram – this helps us to understand the instructions better by allowing us to see the steps. Numbers – these tell us which order we should complete the instructions in. Bossy words tell us what we need to do. They are also called imperative verbs. 1

Check and Change Today we are going to be checking and changing our instructions to make them even better. I have started to write a set of instructions about becoming a superhero. Can you help me to check and change them to make them the best they can be? You can use this checklist to help you.

Check and Change Tick all the features I have remembered to use. Put a dot for any I have forgotten. We can then go back and improve my writing by adding in anything I have forgotten and correcting my mistakes.

Place your cape around your shoulders and tie it securely in place Take your magic flying potion. Make sure you take the correct dose. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables each day to stay healthy and strong. practise flying each day for at least one hour. Always stay alert! You never know when your nemesis might appear!

Make It Better Now read your own instructions and use the checklist to check your work. Put a tick in the ‘Child’ column for things you have remembered or a dot for things you have forgotten to include. Then swap instructions with your friend and check their work. Use the ‘Friend’ column this time.

Edit and Publish We are going to write instructions for how to become a superhero. Look at the features you have forgotten and any mistakes you have made. Can you improve your instructions? When you are happy that you have made your instructions the best they can be, write out a neat copy on the Best Copy Instructions Activity Sheet. Remember to use your best handwriting!
