ØUnusual ØNot normal or typical ØCauses abnormal stress ØImpedes basic physical needs and psychological security Ø Interferes with Department mission or normal daily activities Ø Causes human grief Ø Causes a person to function poorly or not at all Ø Creates a hostile environment Ø Results in financial loss What are some examples of emergencies?

Consulting Up ØThe process of “Consulting Up” is crucial to an effective communication process.

Consulting Up ØThe process of “Consulting Up” is crucial to an effective communication process. All undergraduate, and full time staff members are expected to consult up when appropriate. If there is ever a question about whether to consult up or not…consult up. ØThere are generally two reasons you would need to consult up. Ø You do not know what to do or how to handle a situation Ø An incident has occurred where consulting up is required so staff above you are aware of an incident or situation ØWhat are some incidents you must consult up on? Ø Alcohol, drugs, arrests, medical transports, sexual assault, suicidal ideations, physical altercations, major facility issues, weapons. Remember, if you have a doubt about whether your supervisor needs to know, consult up.

Medical Emergencies ØWhenever staff becomes aware of a resident who may need immediate medical

Medical Emergencies ØWhenever staff becomes aware of a resident who may need immediate medical attention, the GR, DI or RHD on duty should be notified immediately. ØIf the resident’s life is in immediate danger, staff should call UGA Police first for medial assistance and then immediately inform the GR, DI or RHD on duty. ØThese types of emergencies should always be documented immediately in JA. ØIf a resident is sick, but not in immediate danger, refer him or her to the health center and share appropriate phone numbers. Notify your immediate GR, DI or RHD and document in JA. *Transportation for residents needing emergency medical attention should ONLY be provided by UGA Police or an ambulance. Staff members are NOT permitted to transport residents in emergency situations. *

Noise Concerns and Policies ØDuring exam periods, 24 -hour quiet hours are in effect ØUse of musical instruments in the residence halls is prohibited unless the following conditions are met: ØThe use of the instrument is in a designated location (i. e. a piano in a programming room). However, these instruments still fall under the quiet hours guidelines. ØThe resident is permitted to play an instrument only if they can hear the music through headphones. *While residents are encouraged to let offenders know if their activity is creating a disturbance, staff are expected to enforce this policy. Residents who do not follow these guidelines should be documented and be referred through a judicial process. *
