Background/Context Information • French Revolution lasted generally from 1789 -1815 • 1792 is when it became radical and violent • King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are executed in 1793 • Maximilien Robespierre is executed in 1784 • By 1799 Napoleon Bonaparte had seized power • Europe responds to this power which leads to prolonged warfare leading to a French Empire in Europe • Napoleon flees to Britain when Prussia starts to beat his army and is exiled to the island Saint Helena in 1815 where he writes a book about Julius Caesar and dies.
