The CSI Electives CSI currently offers a Forensic Science elective. This class discusses forensic DNA analysis, trace evidence, fingerprint, blood splatter and crime scene analysis, and many other aspects of forensic science. This is a one semester class. Honors Physiology is also currently offered. Human Physiology examines the science of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of humans, their organs, and the cells of which they are composed. The principal level of focus of physiology is at the level of organs and systems.

The CSI Electives A full year Molecular Biology series may be offered in the future, as may a Human Genetics elective. These classes have been offered as part of this program at other schools. The principal level of focus of these classes is at the level of the molecule, and their relationships to human inheritance.

The CSI International Mentoring Seminars Scientists from England, Belgium, Costa Rica, Australia, the Smithsonian Institution, Harvard University and the National Institutes of Health have agreed to mentor our students through on-line interactions.

The CSI International Mentoring Seminars This is the first of its kind program within the LAUSD, and is a very special and exciting opportunity for our students. This aspect of our program should grow, involving many scientists the world over. This is a great way for students to begin developing world-wide contacts, generating tremendous potential for future opportunities.

The Understanding Biodiversity Publication Series CSI students have the opportunity to write and publish “species pages” as part of a new on-line journal. Done in collaboration with the Encyclopedia of Life, based out of the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. The Understanding Biodiversity Publication Series Went Live – November 2011 Other schools invited to participate: Beverly Hills High School El Camino Real High School 2 schools in Bethesda, MD 2 schools in Cambridge, MA 2 schools in London, England More schools will be invited soon. But CSI students have a distinct advantage.

The CSI Speaker Series The CSI “Why Science” Speaker Series brings science professionals from institutions such as the UCLA and USC Schools of Medicine, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratories and California State University, Northridge to our campus. A cohort of 13 laboratories regularly participate.

Three amazing “field trips. ” Juneau We get up close and personal with the glaciers, exploring the length of the ice-carved fjord, cruise beneath cliffs that rise 4, 000 feet above and cruise almost directly under plunging waterfalls. The area teams with wildlife - bears, mountain goats, bald eagles, humpback whales and harbor seals.

Three amazing “field trips. ” Skagway We ascend to the summit of the White Pass for views of majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls and epic glaciers. We travel through the glaciated area known as Tormented Valley, and along the string of lakes that make up the headwaters of the Yukon River.

Three amazing “field trips. ” Ketchikan Rainforest adventure Home to a diverse cross-section of animals including bears, eagles, salmon, sand hill cranes, wolves and trumpeter swans - learn about the many amazing animal and plant species native to the region.

CSI Science Tour Series We have chosen to travel with Princess Cruises due to their outstanding reputation in Alaskan cruising. Princess Cruises, which is based in Santa Clarita, has offered to work with our group directly, guaranteeing the lowest possible price for this outstanding experience.

CSI Science Tour Series The price will be approximately $1500 -$1700 Includes all accommodations (7 nights), airfare, food, tips and ecological tours. Students are responsible for miscellaneous expenses (souvenirs, airline baggage fees). This price is subject to slight changes, and should be reduced by student fundraising efforts.

CSI Science Tour Series A refundable security deposit of $250 is due ASAP. This allows a reservation to be placed. A payment schedule has been arranged. Students may also signup any time prior to February 2013. Refunds of all money paid can be issued up to March 1, 2013. The final payment is due March 1, 2013. Once again, this final payment should be reduced by fundraising efforts.

CSI Science Tour Series We need to act now as we want to book a block of rooms on the first possible date – which is in about 23 weeks. Parents and older siblings are welcome. A passport is required.
