Elements of Communication
Sender “THE WHO” The person who passes on the message. • What are ways that someone can initiate communication?
Receiver “THE WHO” • The person whom the message is sent to. • Does the receiver have to receive the message?
Channels of Communication “THE HOW” • The way that the information is delivered to the receiver. • Text message, email, private conversation, blog, news article, a speech or presentation. How do you choose the proper channel?
Message “THE WHAT” • Information with meaning that is shared with others. • What are you trying to communicate? • Who decides what the message means? The sender, or the receiver? – Encoding – putting thoughts into words – Decoding – deciding what those words mean
Noise • A distraction that interferes with the sharing of a message. • What is an example of noise when sending a text message?
How to Create an Effective Message • Choose the appropriate channel. • Is the message clear? Is everyone on the same page? • Is the language appropriate?

INTRApersonal • Conversations that take place within your own head
INTERpersonal • Formal or informal conversation that happens between two people • Through any channel • The two people have an identifiable relationship with each other
Small Grou p • Involves 3 – 20 people • These people have come together for a certain reason
Public • There is only one speaker • This person delivers the message to 20 or more people
Ethics • Honesty – Always tell the truth! • Integrity – Keep your promises! • Fairness – Listen with an open mind! • Respect – Be considerate! • Accountability – Take responsibility for what you say!
