Center for Advanced Design and Manufacturing of Integrated Microfluidics Cross-Site Collaborations at I/UCRCs Abraham P. Lee Center Director, Professor & Chair Dept. Biomedical Engineering University of California, Irvine NSF I/UCRC Biennial Meeting July 27, 2017
Introduction to CADMIM § Fundamental research to create “Ubiquitous Diagnostics” – Advanced design tools for labs-on-a-chip, where users do not need to – – – know details of manufacturing process Labs-on-a-chip produced via high volume manufacturing processes using common materials (paper, plastic, etc). Integrated, low-cost, simple, labs-on-a-chip that can rapidly perform assessment anywhere and everywhere Environment, agriculture, food and water supplies, and ultimately for human health and safety. www. inrf. uci. edu/cadmim

Collaboration comes in many forms! 1) Within a university site 2) Site-to-Site Stanford University (affiliate) 3) Site-to-Affiliate University 4) Site-to-IAB member CADMIM Industrial Advisory Board UC Santa Barbara (affiliate)
Key Lessons in Multi-Site Collaborations § Strong collaborative relationship between site leaders to develop collaborative culture § Initial meetings with the faculty at two sites to set up long term vision and grand challenges – pow wow brainstorming and building rapport § Pro-actively look for collaborative solutions to IAB challenges - projects developed through a year-long process, 6 month survey to assess industry needs § At most 2 year (1 -year renewable) projects § Bigger projects resulting from I/UCRC are how we measure success (NSF, NIH, company-sponsored) § Sensitive to stage of career when promoting collaborative projects
Current State of Center Projects § 60% of CADMIM research portfolio to date is collaborative – 5 Site-to-Site collaborative projects – 6 Within-Site collaborative projects – 3 Site-to-Affiliate University collaborative projects – 2 Site-to-IAB Member collaborative projects § Funding: – CADMIM = 3. 5 year old (started in March 2014). – IAB membership fees ($50 K annual) collected centrally at UC Irvine. – Research funds subcontracted to UIC, U. Cincinnati, and any affiliate university. Subcontract remains open for the entire duration of Phase 1. Zero overhead incurred on any subcontract at UC Irvine. § Site-to-Site Project Management: – Similar to any other project (monthly group telecons, monthly reporting, progress checks at IAB meetings, etc. )
Site-to-Site Success Story 1: ES-006 § Funded in 2014: – ES-006: “Intermediate-Scale Manufacturing for Sample Enrichment and Concentration” – PIs: Abraham Lee (UC Irvine), Ian Papautsky (UIC/U. Cincinnati) – Students: Neha Garg (UC Irvine), Nivedita (U. Cincinnati, graduated) – Funded at CADMIM for 2 years Spiral i. MF (Separation) U. Nominated Breakthroughs
Summary – Pros and Cons § Pros: – Our field is highly interdisciplinary. No one person has all the expertise – – to develop an integrated lab-on-a-chip. Multiple areas of expertise are required. With multiple PIs and students, can conduct more complex research, attack broader problems, compared to single PI and single student. Accelerated progress Relationship building between collaborators Higher IAB engagement – multiple company project mentors, new partnerships. § Cons: – Multi-PI projects cost more than single PI projects - on the average – – $80 K at 10% overhead for 12 months (2 students) Logistically more cumbersome (require fund transfers, setting up new subcontracts). Affiliate universities are not required to raise money for the center, whereas official sites of the I/UCRC are.
