Overview of Getting a Residency
The Match Process • Impartial method of matching applicant’s preferences for positions with residency program’s preferences for applicants • Four matching programs: • National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) – the main Residency Match • San Francisco Match – Ophthalmology positions • Urology Match – operated by the American Urological Association • Military Match – Army, Air Force and Navy positions
Position Descriptions • Categorical-C: programs that begin in the PGY-1 year and provide the full training required for specialty board certification. • Advanced-A: programs that begin in the PGY-2 after a year of prerequisite training. • Preliminary-P: or one-year programs that begin in the PGY-1 year and provide prerequisite training for advanced programs.
Residency Application Process • Spring of M 3 year: • Apply for away electives • Develop M 4 schedule • Individual career counseling/MSPE meetings • Early M 4 year: • Begin application process – ERAS, personal statement, LORs • Take Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS • ERAS applications released 9/15 • MSPE released 10/1
Residency Application Process (cont’d) • October – January: Residency Interviews • February: Submit ROL • March: NRMP Match Day! • Early match specialties have their own match days in December and January
Does Everyone Get Their First Choice?
What Happens if I Don’t Match? • Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) • Opportunity to review unfilled programs and apply for those positions – often extremely limited choices and very competitive • SOAP is not a good Plan B
How to Succeed in the Match • Everyone needs a Plan B • Keep options open from M 1 year • Pursue a variety of interests – don’t narrow in on one specialty too early • Application strategy NOT the same as getting into medical school • Academics are primary • Leadership is great, but will not substitute for poor academics • Complete Match Check-Ups annually
