Main Goals: �Identify after-school activities within Alachua County that are suitable for children in the age group 5 -17 � Locate where these after-school activities are distributed throughout Alachua County �Locate where children are in Alachua County relative to after-school activities �Assess the locations of low-income and higher-income children’s accessibility to after-school activities �Stimulate interest and awareness of possible infringements of children’s rights in the county �Promote the improvement of children’s conditions in the urban environment; specifically for the interests of the less advantaged children in the community
Background � Latest data reports about 30% of children are overweight or obese. � Census 2000 reports 22. 8% of residents live at or below the federal poverty level (including 19. 4% of residents under age 18) � American Community Survey reported Gainesville poverty to be 32. 3% in 2006 � Children are spending more time indoors watching TV and less time interacting with the natural environment or exploring the community. � Other research indicates that green outdoor areas are disappearing or are restricted and children are often segregated from society.
Background Continued � Need to encourage walking and cycling, improve access to recreational spaces, and make children and their parents generally feel safer about being outside � Children are given little consideration when it comes to design. There is a lack of planning for children. � Second, they are not given an opportunity to participate in decision-making. � Need to focus on safety, integration, and green space for children
Objectives � Identify children population distributions with a focus on the low- and highincome children population. � Recognize which after-school activities available to children in Alachua County. � Discover which areas are “safe” in Alachua County. � Identify which after-school activities are within close proximity to low- and high- income children � Develop strategies to include children in the planning process so that children have a direct voice in the development of policies, laws, regulations, and budgets for the community.
