What’s new this year? The Final Service Specification and PGD see here https: //www. england. nhs. uk/publication/community-pharmacy-seasonal-influenza-vaccine-service/ Announcement summary: • Flu vaccination service specification and national Patient Group Direction (PGD) published • Service to commence on Tuesday 1 st September 2020 • PSNC has successfully negotiated key flexibilities to help contractors to offer the service in a COVID-safe way, allowing for vaccinations off-site and outside the consultation room • Pharmacies can also now vaccinate care home staff at their place of work • PSNC has also secured administrative improvements including a new verbal consent model • Funding is still under negotiation – PSNC is pushing hard for an uplift to funding The key changes are: • Need to obtain written consent removed. Contractors must record verbal consent obtained • Patient cohorts updated to reflect the content of the 2020/21 Annual Flu Letter • Need to notify regional teams prior to undertaking vaccinations off-site is removed • Need to notify patient’s GP in advance of vaccinating a patient in their home / care home is removed • Restrictions on off-site vaccination (only in patient’s home and care homes) removed and contractors are now able to vaccinate off-site within professional standards (this includes being able to vaccinate care home staff within the care home) • Contractors able to vaccinate patients in any appropriate space within the pharmacy (although the requirement to have a consultation room remains, and the patient must still be able to have their vaccination in the consultation room if they request it)

PPE use for the 2020/21 Flu Service Public Health England (PHE) and the other

PPE use for the 2020/21 Flu Service Public Health England (PHE) and the other UK public health bodies, alongside the NHS, published the following guidance on Friday 21 st August 2020: COVID-19: Guidance for the remobilisation of services within health and care settings – Infection prevention and control recommendations This supersedes the previous guidance issued on 18 th June 2020 Key Information for flu vaccination provision: • In the revised guidance, gloves and aprons are recommended when there is (anticipated) exposure to blood/body fluids or non-intact skin • The guidance states that in some clinical settings, such as vaccination/injection clinics, where contact with individuals is minimal, the need for single use PPE items for each encounter, for example, gloves and aprons is not necessary. Staff administering vaccinations/injections must apply hand hygiene between patients and wear a sessional Type IIR mask • The previous guidance on PPE to be used when vaccinating patients was use of a Type IIR mask and eye protection on a sessional basis and use of disposable gloves and aprons on a single use, changed between each patient

Training FAQs from PSNC Q. I completed face-to-face training covering injection technique and basic life support last year, but I have been told that unless I vaccinated over a specific number of patients last year I will need to re-do the training again this year? Does this apply to the NHS Advanced Flu Vaccination Service? No, this does not apply to the NHS Advanced Flu Vaccination Service. NHSE&I has determined that pharmacists providing the Flu Vaccination Service need to attend face-to-face training for both injection technique and basic life support training every three years, irrespective of how many vaccines are administered each year. If you are providing private flu vaccinations (not as part of the NHS Advanced Flu Vaccination Service) there may be minimum activity requirements in order for your training to be valid; this should be verified with the private PGD provider. Pharmacy Quality Scheme The aim of this criterion is to increase the uptake of flu vaccination to patients aged 65 and over. Contractors in the PCN that wish to be involved, should agree how they will collaborate with each other and discuss how they could collaborate with general practice colleagues to achieve the above aim. These discussions will be facilitated by the Community Pharmacy PCN Lead, and they will also engage with the PCN Clinical Director to discuss collaborative working. Mapping community pharmacy providers to PCNs Discussing next steps with PCN Leads Using the PCN mailing groups to support collaboration
