Infrahyoid muscles • 1)Sternohyoid • Origin-Posterior surface of manubrium sterni and clavicle. • Insertion-Lower border of hyoid bone. • Nerve supply-Ansa cervicalis. • Action-Depresses the hyoid bone after its elevation during swallowing and during vocal movements.

 • 2)Sternothyroid • Origin-Posterior surface of manubrium sterni and adjoining parts of first

• 2)Sternothyroid • Origin-Posterior surface of manubrium sterni and adjoining parts of first costal cartilage. • Insertion • Oblique line of lamina of thyroid cartilage. • Nerve supply-Ansa cervicalis. • Actions-Depresses the larynx , after its elevation in swallowing and its vocal movements.

 • 3)Thyrohyoid • Origin-Oblique line of thyroid cartilage. • Insertion-Lower border of body

• 3)Thyrohyoid • Origin-Oblique line of thyroid cartilage. • Insertion-Lower border of body and greater cornua of the hyoid bone. • Nerve supply-C 1 through hypoglossal nerve. • Actions-Depresses the hyoid bone. • Elevates the larynx when the hyoid bone is fixed by the suprahyoid muscles.

 • 4)Omohyoid • Origin-Inferior belly • Upper border of scapula near the medial

• 4)Omohyoid • Origin-Inferior belly • Upper border of scapula near the medial side of the suprascapular notch and adjoining suprascapular ligament. • Insertion-Superior belly • Lower border of body of hyoid bone lateral to the sternohyoid muscle.

 • Nerve supply • Superior belly by the superior root of the ansa

• Nerve supply • Superior belly by the superior root of the ansa cervicalis and inferior belly by nerve loop of ansa cervicalis. • Actions • Depresses the hyoid bone following its elevation during swallowing and in vocal movements.
