Introduction • First and last impressions are important in any part of life, especially

Introduction • First and last impressions are important in any part of life, especially in writing. This is why the introduction and conclusion of any paper - whether it be a simple essay or a long research paper - are essential. Introductions and conclusions are just as important as the body of your paper. The introduction is what makes the reader want to continue reading your paper. The conclusion is what makes your paper stick in the reader's mind. 3 -5 sentences.

Introduction Your introductory paragraph should include: • 1) Hook: Anecdote, quote, statistic or question that pulls the reader into your paper topic. This should be interesting and specific. • 2) Transition: Sentence that connects the hook with thesis. • 3) Thesis: Sentence (or two) that summarizes the overall main point of the paper. The thesis should answer the prompt question.

Introduction-Anecdote • I finally arrived home after a long, hard day at school. As soon as I opened the front door, I was hit with the smell of something amazing – chocolate chip cookies. My mouth began to water as I imagined the warm, gooey, sweet treat that awaited me. I knew these cookies would make my day all better. I rushed to the kitchen only to find my little brother licking his lips as he finished the last cookie. I was never so frustrated angry! It seems as if my annoyance with my brother is an every day thing. And, although my brother bothers me every chance he gets, he is not the worse thing in my life. The three things that annoy me most are my hat, my coat and my shoes.

Introductions – Statistics There are many annoyances in our everyday life…from barking dogs, clicking pens and traffic. In fact, statistics say that more than 80% of commuters in to New York City are plagued by more than 50 minutes of traffic. Talk about annoying! Although thankfully, my morning commute is a mere 15 minutes with no traffic, there are other things in life that plague me. The three most annoying things to me are my hat, my coat and my shoes.

Introduction - Question Have you ever been bothered by barking dogs or an hour long traffic jam? These are two of life’s biggest annoyances. And, although barking dogs and traffic jams irritate me, there are other times that my frustration level hits the roof. The three things that annoy me most are my hat, my coat and my shoes.

It is the last opportunity to get your point across to the reader and leave the reader feeling as if he or she learned something. Leaving a paper "dangling" without a proper conclusion can seriously devalue what was said in the body itself. Remember, the FIRST sentence of your conclusion should be your re-stated thesis. 3 -5 sentences.

My brother is certainly aggravating, especially when he eats the last of those delicious chocolate chip cookies. But, luckily, Mom always makes two batches, so at least I can drown my sorrows with some sweet, gooey goodness…and a glass of cold milk!
