What is Mental and Emotional Health � � MENTAL/EMOTIONAL HEALTH- the ability to handle the stresses and changes of everyday life in a reasonable way. Your mental emotional health can affect the other parts of your health. � How? � The other parts of health can also effect your Mental Emotional health. � How?
Signs of Good Mental Emotional Health � � Having a good attitude and positive outlook on life. Recognizing your strengths and working to improve your weaknesses. Setting realistic goals. Acting responsibly. � � � Being able to relax and have fun with others and by yourself. Being aware of your feelings and expressing them in a healthy way. Accepting constructive feedback from others without becoming angry or defensive.
Signs of Good Mental Emotional Health � � � Accepting your self and others. Adapting to new situations. Showing empathy-the ability to identify with and share other people’s feelings.
How You see Yourself � � � SELF CONCEPT- the way you view yourself overall. Self image Affects the way you relate to yourself and the world � � PERSONALITY- a combination of your feelings, likes, dislikes, attitudes, abilities and habits. Personality is influenced by � Heredity � What you learn from others � Culture
How You see Yourself � � � SELF-ESTEEM- how you feel about yourself High self-esteem leads to confidence CONFIDENCE- the belief in your ability to do what you set out to do. � � What influences Self Esteem Messages from family and friends. � How? � The media � How?
Building Resilience � � RESILIENCE- the ability to recover from problems or loss Does not mean you never have problems � It means that you can face the problem and find a positive solution
Building Self Esteem � Set Realistic Goals � Use � short term goals Focus on your Strengths � Find something you like to do and work on it. � Ask for help � Accept you may need help when learning something new and ask for it. � Remember that no one is perfect � Identify your weaknesses without judging yourself � Learn from constructive feedback � Realize that sometimes failure is out of your control � Mistakes are opportunities for improvement.
