Mental Health • Mental Health: Generally having a positive outlook, being comfortable with yourself and others, being able to meet life's challenge and demands.
Signs of Good Mental Health • 1. Realistic about strengths and weaknesses • 2. Responsible for personal behavior • 3. Avoid high-risk behavior • 4. Open-minded and flexible • 5. Fun Loving and able to relax • 6. Respect personal and others needs
Signs of Good Mental Health • 7. Respect everyone's values, including their own. • 8. Express emotions in a safe manner • 9. Invest time and energy into relationships • 10. Put talents and abilities to good use. • 11. View change as a challenge and opportunity.
Road Blocks to Good Mental Health • An all or nothing attitude • Expecting the worst in others or yourself • Being a perfectionist • Letting actions or words betray values
Positive Feedback vs. Negative Feedback • Positive Feedback = words or actions of praise and acknowledgement • Vs. • Negative Feedback = words or actions that cause defamation of character

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Personality Typing • Modeling: copying other's behaviors. • Remember, all of us adapt and take on different personality types depending on the situation at hand.
Emotions • The ways you express your emotions can have a lot to do with your personality. • EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE LOVED • Empathy: an ability to imagine how others feel • Fear: Reacting to a stimulus. Your Sympathetic Nervous System reacts by preparing you for “fight or flight. ”
Anger/Guilt • Hostility: an intentional use of unfriendly or nasty behavior. • ANGER IS ALMOST ALWAYS CAUSED BY FEELING UNIMPORTANT! • Ask yourself, “How do I feel unimportant when I am angry? ” • Guilt: When you feel you have done something wrong.
Dealing with Emotions • Remember, there are both positive/effective and negative/non-effective ways of dealing with emotions. • Defense Mechanisms: Strategies used to deal with strong or stressful situations.
