Anthropometrics Ergonomics This refers to the measurements of the human body. Designers must take these into consideration when creating a product to make sure it will fit and work correctly. If a product is not comfortable to use then the client will not want to use it. Designers consider what they can do to a product to make it more comfortable or easy to use. Bodyspace is a book the is commonly used by all designers. It contains a vast range of measurements from all over the human body. Both pens do the same job but one is designed to fit comfortably in the users hand.

Task 1 – What do you own that is ergonomic? Look around the room

Task 1 – What do you own that is ergonomic? Look around the room you are in. Make a list of all the products that you can touch/use that have been designed with comfort in mind. Example: Computer Mouse. Write down what they are, what their job is and how the product has been designed ergonomically. Products will work just the same without the ergonomic features that the designer has added. You are more likely to buy and use the product if it is comfortable. This product is used to access features on a computer. The designer has rounded the edges of the mouse to make it more comfortable to hold. There are shallow dents on the clicking parts that let the user locate their fingers easily and the scroll wheel has ridges on it to provide a small amount of grip.

Task 2 – Redesign a product Choose one product from the list that you have just created. Redesign this product to make it more comfortable to use. Think carefully about the person that will be using it, the function of the product and where it will be used. Draw your design including colour and annotation. Remember that you can change the product to suit what you want it to do. For example the mouse could be totally redesigned so buttons and scroll parts are in a different place or a different shape.
