x. Haul – what are we hauling and why? Dan Warren, Head of 5 G Research, Samsung

Motivations Performance – 5 G is laden with KPIs that didn’t exist in previous G’s, some of which are not achievable with ‘legacy’ network topologies Cost reduction – Centralisation of network functionality changes the redundancy model, hence reduces platform and functional costs (Cap. Ex), and spares inventory and powering (Op. Ex). Leverage Softwarisation – Capability to integrate new vendors and/or functions – Dynamically re-provision the network to account for time-of-day, time-of-week, time-ofyear, or one-off network variability. ⓒ 2017. Aspiration– where we are told 5 G will take us 5 G will support multiple sets of KPI’s, which in some cases conflict with each other. Virtualisation of Network Functions allows highly elastic, and dynamic placement of VNFs – can lead to VNF’s being topologically moved for operational optimisation due traffic variance based on time of day/week/season, or on unexpected event response 5 G Networks can be sliced to create multiple topological instances, and/or to offer Enterprise customer play-pens within a dedicated network slices ⓒ 2017. Operational realities Some network functions will be ‘per slice’ whereas others will be ‘mutli-slice’ – The split may not be the same for every slice – Two slices that have the same ‘per slice vs multi-slice’ functional split may be deployed on different network hardware topologies Enterprise customers will likely want a ‘service’ contract that has to be manifested as multiple slices of different types. – May also want a degree of autonomy or even their own Cloud to be incorporated. MANO is a far more interactive domain than network management has been. Orchestration is a multi-domain task – per VNF, per network domain, per slice, per service…Consequence is a tiered hierarchy of orchestrators. Dynamic orchestration of VNFs and slices places load on transport networks – This may be a ultra-reliable slice in its own right Physical infrastructure is common to all slices ⓒ 2017.
