MTF-RMS CONCEPT MTF-RMS: the system of the systems • • Any NPP is fully equipped with many monitoring equipment • The systems dedicated to monitor radiations have continuously grown in number and complexity The main goal of radiological protection is to reduce the personnel exposure levels • For a proper optimization, the information quality and quantity is critical To take full advantage of all data provided by these monitors (over 100 channels for each unit), it is a must to view and consolidate all inputs into one central system. • Storage of data • Data trend studies possibility • Set/modify acquisition parameters • Correlation between parameters is possible Make all systems belonging to various generations, technologies and/or manufacturers to work together The answer: MTF-RMS (MATE-FIN Radiological Monitoring System)

MTF-RMS Short History • • • Generation I For the first time in 2005, all data from various radiation monitoring systems are put together. MTF-RMS generation I was built around the Ramvision software developed by MGP Instruments. MATE-FIN has also developed custom software for TAM, C&C monitors and portable monitors. There were separate servers for data collection and storage. Data were visualized via software clients, inside the local network. • • • Generation II The generation II is using the newest IT technologies, like industrial Ethernet, fiberoptic, virtual machine, etc. There is one central data-base with modern data management: detailed reports, data visualization, trends, etc. The system is redundant and flexible There is an unlimited number of clients through the web interface (JSON / WCF Web service) accessible all over Intranet

Radioactive Waste management, characterization, treatment

MATE-FIN participated in several projects focused on radioactive waste management: Ø Characterisation of Radioactive Waste at Cernavoda NPP • Project developed in 2005 -2006 • Project funded through PHARE funds • Part of a consortium lead by Quintessa (DECOM, WERT, Josef Stefan Institute, MATE-FIN) Ø Study for determining the metodhs and techniques for treatment and conditioning of the radioactive wastes produced in Cernavodă NPP, for the final storage • Project between: 12. 01. 2009 – 13. 07. 2009. • Partners: KINECTRICS – Canada, NUVIA – UK

MATE-FIN is the operator for the radioactive waste at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant since 2008 Ø The radioactive waste produced by the plant is currently stored in a purpose built interim storage facility located onsite ØThe activities we perform are: characterization of the organic liquid and solid waste, Ø treatment of the organic liquid waste and inflammable solid waste, Ø conditioning Øby incineration - the solidified organic liquid and incinerable waste Øby melting - the metallic waste Ø

q CHARACTERIZATION: o Drum by drum measurement o Representative sample from each drum o ETM (easy to measure), DTM (difficult to measure) radionuclides o H-3 and C-14 measurements o Scaling factors ETM-DTM o 62 tones have been characterised until the end of June 2015

q TREATMENT: o Collection and segregation of organic liquid waste and inflammable solids o Solidification of organic liquids using Nochar polymer o Decontamination of organic liquids waste (oils) o 40 tones of organic liquid waste have been solidified until the end of June 2015 o 20 tones of oils have been decontaminated o Based on the characterization results and national & international clearance limits, around 14 tones of oil have been free released

q INCINERATION: o Studsvik Nuclear AB has been selected as the certified operator for incineration o Waste packages are prepared according to Studsvik’s specifications o 39 tones of solidified waste and burnable waste have been incinerated

As a result of the experimental campaign and the large scale project executed by MATE-FIN: Ø Nochar polymer systems have been effective in the immobilization of tritiated organic liquid and inflammable waste from Cernavoda NPP; Ø During the experimental campaign, MATE-FIN established the appropriate organic liquid to polymer ratios, depending on the type and physical characteristics of the waste (oil, solvents, scintillation cocktails) Ø In the first 2 years of project, the entire quantity of historical organic liquids was solidified.
