WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH CHALLENGING MBTI TEAMBUILDING
WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH CHALLENGING MBTI® TEAM-BUILDING WORKSHOP SCENARIOS AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM Presented by: Patrick L. Kerwin, MBA, NCC MBTI® Master Practitioner San Diego, California www. pkerwin. com May 30, 2018
DELIVERING WORKSHOPS TO VERY LARGE OR VERY SMALL TEAMS For very large groups: Keep things moving! Break each preference group into smaller groups, then have them consolidate their responses and then report out Monitor the debriefs For very small groups: You can still do activities Ask participants for examples of how the differences have presented in their interactions with each other Have each person meet one-on-one with each other person on the team
Coaching HANDLING DICHOTOMY ACTIVITIES WITH LOPSIDED DISTRIBUTIONS If there’s only one person in a group: Still do the activity How is it for that person to be the only one with that preference on the team? Don’t make them the punch line! If everyone has the same preference: Don’t create a problem if there isn’t one! Explore the upsides and downsides of having that type distribution Discuss if there would be any benefit from more fully including any of the missing preferences You may have to make suggestions! Introduction to Type ® and Coaching, pages 15 – 17 Reinforce that they don’t have to go hire someone with that preference!
FACILITATING ACTIVITIES WHEN THE OUTCOME DOESN’T SEEM TO MATCH THE PREFERENCE Don’t throw type under the bus! If opposite preference groups respond similarly: Ask each group for definitions of the statements that were similar If any one preference group responds uncharacteristically: Ask them to explain why they responded the way they did Ask if anyone in the group seemed to have different responses from the rest of the group Remember that people can learn to do things that aren’t natural
DEALING WITH SKEPTICAL PARTICIPANTS Ask yourself if your type is having a reaction Remember that some types are naturally skeptical Ask about the sources of their skepticism Remember, some types only “buy in” to something when that something gets complicated! Don’t aim for 100% But do try to help them find utility in the framework and the language
HELPING PEOPLE WHO CAN’T FIGURE OUT THEIR TYPE Don’t feel like you have to have the answer You can, however, feed back your observations – carefully! Let the activities and resources do the heavy lifting Take a deeper dive into type dynamics Get comfortable with people not landing …especially if you have a preference for J!
