WELCOME TO CS 1046 APPROACHABLE APPS A Gentle Introduction to Programming
Who this course aimed at? Someone who: � Is logical and loves problem solving � Likes math (or at least doesn’t hate math) � Has never coded before if you have coded before – you will be bored! This is an introduction to programming using Java. Script NOT an introduction to Java. Script for programmers
What software you will need? Text Editor like Notepad or Text. Edit (Notepad++ or Code Writer are better than Notepad) � For Mac Users – you can use Text. Edit but you might want to try Brackets, Sublime, Atom Browser preferably Chrome
What we will be learning? The beginnings/bare necessities of Java. Script A bit of HTML A bit of CSS Problem solving and debugging
How this BLENDED course will work? Videos (lectures) for all the material will be online and done on your own time Labs are done on your own time, email me if you get stuck need to do ONE lab per week � Labs are in the assignments You will have a 30 minute quiz of about 20 -25 questions every SECOND Wednesday night (the night before the flipped classroom) We will meet once every OTHER week to do group work 5 times during the term. 3 individual assignments 1 final exam

Late Policy Labs can NOT be late Flipped Classroom exercises can NOT be late Quizzes MUST be done Wednesday night. Assignments can be up to 3 days late – we deduct 5% per day.
How do you access all the material? It is ALL in Owl http: //owl. uwo. ca
Other notes: Syntax issues: � Notepad – sometimes the quotes get messed up “Hello World” (copy into Notepad) vs. "Hello World" when copying , retype them. Eg. � Try to use Chrome and Notepad++ � I have syntax issues all the time, you need to be very careful
More notes There is more than one way to skin a cat! � Most of the time I am just going to show you one way to do something, there may be other ways, but we don’t have time to see every variation. � For example: var x; var y; x = 5; y = 6; var x, y; x = 5; y = 6; var x=5; var y=6; x = 5; y = 6;
Breakdown of grades: Quizzes 12% (5 quizzes, lowest mark dropped) Always the evening before a flipped class Flipped Classroom 10% (5 flipped classes) Weekly Labs 20% (10 labs worth 2% each) Assignment 1 5% Assignment 2 7% Assignment 3 11% Final Exam 35%
