TALKING DAY Hey everyone, Your first step is to make sure each student gets his/her annotations graded by Mr. Turley. Going table by table, form an orderly line at Mr. Turley’s desk, so he can grade everyone’s annotations. Second, you must choose some important roles. Move to the next slide once the entire class has read this slide and had their annotations graded. P. S. Go quickly.

Step 2: Understand Grading What to do…. Talking Note Taking Group Grade How you’re graded… Each participant is responsible for contributing to the group’s objective(s). Each time a participant contributes to the group’s objective(s) in a *meaningful way, he or she will receive one point. Participants may receive up to 4 total talking points. Each participant is responsible for taking good, accurate notes throughout the discussion. Notes will be handed in at the end of class. Participants receive one point for every half page of notes. Participants may receive up to 3 note points. The group is responsible for finishing and submitting the teacher generated task(s) in the allotted time. The task will be graded out of 4 points. Remember, the Mediator and the Recorder get an automatic 10/10 for their grade while the Timer gets two bonus points added to his or her grade.

Your participation will also be scored based on whether or not you contribute in some way. If you do not talk at some point (and provide a meaningful contribution), you will not receive points for “Talking. ” If you read ahead, please do not spoil anything for students who have only done the required amount of reading (through chapter 7). Today is very tight on time, so make sure you stick to your time limits and work efficiently. After you finish watching it, you will have 10 -15 minutes to analyze and compare the speech from the movie to Old Major’s speech from Ch. 1 of Animal Farm and to current modern issues. Recorders will use the giant post-it note on the board to create this comparison based on the class’ discussion. The movie will take a little over 5 minutes. The mediator should sum these ideas up in a quick summary after everyone has had a chance to look at it. This should only take a couple of minutes. Discuss methods of argument, persuasion, and propaganda and determine what category these speeches fall under and why. 2. He also wants the animals to believe the same things he does. • Persuasion: Charlie Chaplin, he was persuading people to believe him, to follow him, and to have the people to fight for themselves. Trying to get people to believe what he thinks is the best. Uses faith to glorify his side. • Propaganda: Charlie Chaplin, saying things to appeal to the audience to believe that his way is correct. Uses emotions to help people understand. • Uses the dogs to bring out fear: propaganda • Refer to how life was before the rebellion • Whenever Napoleon was doubted, someone was there to change their mind: persuasion and propaganda
