Tissue – Imtiaz Dharker • You’ve probably heard about this poem and we’ve probably done you no favours in leaving it until last. • We will consolidate your understanding of this poem when we see you but try your best to annotate it and begin to understand its ideas. • One clever (if rather stressed) student tweeted the poet last year for last minute help. Her response is useful in focusing you before you begin…
So before we go any further, read the poem, then take 3 differently coloured highlighters and track these 3 images on your second reading by highlighting the references.
• Let’s hear from this hero one more time. • As ever, make notes on your copy of the poem • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=w. Vj. Zpi 9 lkc. I
Techniques to consider § § § Adjective choices Metaphor Extended metaphor Symbolism Internal rhyme Enjambment § Irregular rhyme/line lengths Euphemism A mild or indirect expression substituted for one considered too harsh or blunt Internal rhyme – within one line § Symbolism of tissue paper § Power/fragility of human life § The passing of time/old age § The human condition
Structural techniques • Does Dharker move from one topic to another in a certain way? • What happens to the size or importance of the objects and images? • Are there any examples of repeated words / ideas / semantic fields?
Optional Task This programme is excellent if you want to further your understanding of the poet and her poem. https: //www. bbc. co. uk/sounds/play/b 061 pgrv You will be able to make links along the lines of her experiences of architecture, paper, family. Listen right to the end!
TASK: Re-write and improve my paragraph Dharker seems to sujest that we give too much power to impersonal objects. She would like “daylight [to] break through capitals and monoliths” and calls these “the shapes that pride can make” Dharker uses enjambment to reinforce her message that rigid structures aren’t necessary and by using the vague word “shapes, ” she shows how little attension she pays to grand displays like these. She likes the personal stories told by everyday paper objects instead which is why she says stuff should be built out of that.

Final Task: Use the chart below to PLAN a response to the question. You can write it up as additional practice for your assessment, if you so choose. How do Dharker and Shelley present their ideas about power? Tissue Ozymandias Hint: Power of humans, Power of nature, Power of time, Arrogance/Hubris, Statues/Monoliths are rigid and don’t change with the times, time moves on…
