WHAT IS RANSOMWARE ? Ransomware is a kind of cyber attack that involves hackers taking control of a computer system and blocking access to it until a ransom is paid.

WHERE DID RANSOMWARE ORIGINATE? The first documented case appeared in 2005 in the United States, but quickly spread around the world.

WHAT IS WANNA CRY? ? ? Wanna. HOW IT WORKS? For cyber criminals to gain access to the system they need to download a type of malicious software onto a device within the network. This is often done by getting a victim to click on a link or download it by mistake. Once the software is on a victim's computer the hackers can launch an attack that locks all files it can find within a network. This tends to be a gradual process with files being encrypted one after another.

HOW DOES IT AFFECT A COMPUTER? The software is normally contained within an attachment to an email that masquerades as something innocent. Once opened it encrypts the hard drive, making it impossible to access or retrieve anything stored on there – such as photographs, documents or music.

WANNACRY RANSOMWARE ATTACK The Wanna. Cry ransomware attack is an ongoing worldwide cyberattack by the Wanna. Cry ransomware cryptoworm, which targets computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system by encrypting data and demanding ransom payments in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. The attack started on Friday, 12 May 2017, and has been described as unprecedented in scale, infecting more than 230, 000 computers in over 150 countries. The worst-hit countries are reported to be Russia, Ukraine, India and Taiwan, but parts of Britain's National Health Service (NHS), Spain's Telefónica, Fed. Ex and Deutsche Bahn were hit; along with many other countries and companies worldwide.

The most common ways of installing the virus are through compromised emails and websites.
