UNIT 2: SELF AND OTHERS AREA OF STUDY 2: INTELLIGENCE & PERSONALITY
MEASURING INTELLIGENCE Most conventional intelligence tests assess abilities dependent on literacy and numeracy They are designed to be taken individually The 3 tests that we study are; 1. Binet’s Test of Intelligence 2. Stanford-Binet Test of Intelligence 3. Wechsler’s Tests of Intelligence
MEASURING INTELLIGENCE 1. BINET’S TEST OF INTELLIGENCE Specifically designed for use with schoolchildren Based on the assumption that intelligence is age-related Items arranged in increasing level of difficulty Final result was a number called ‘mental age’ (eg. 3 years, 6 months) TASKS Pointing to nose, mouth Repeating two digits Identifying objects NUMBER OF ITEMS CORRECT 8 MENTAL AGE 3 years, 6 months ‘Mental age’ should be the same as ‘chronological age’
MEASURING INTELLIGENCE 2. STANFORD-BINET TEST OF INTELLIGENCE Lewis Terman revised Binet’s test for an American audience The latest revision was done in 2003 (SB-5) 2 years - 85+years Four cognitive abilities assessed; 1. Fluid Reasoning Knowledge 2. Quantitative Reasoning 3. Visual-Spatial Processing 4. Working Memory
