Translation Procedures • • Different from Translation strategies. Used for smaller units – sentences. Metods applied to attempt equivalence. Translation Procedures – Transliteration – Translation of SL characters into TL. Focus is on the script. – Transcription – Translation of SL sounds into TL. Focus on phonetic transcription. – Transposition – ‘shift’ – grammatical change that occurs when transfering from SL into TL. • Newmark divides into four: 1. Position of words 2. No equal grammatical structure 3. Equal grammatical structures available, but not in natural usage 4. Change in structure to replace lexical gaps. Ms. Rakhi L. Translation Procedures – Modulation – Expression of same phenomenon in a different way. – Adaptation – Change in content and form to suit that of the TL. – Calque – ‘Through Translation’ – Imitation of the structure and form of the SL rather than TL. May be different from the forms of TL. – Transcreation- The process of adapting a message from one language to another, while maintaining its intent, style, tone and context.
