Transfer of Energy COLORED PAPER JAMIE LAVERY IDA HOUGHTON
Jamie Lavery and Ida Houghton GLCE: 4 PS 3 -2. Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents. Lesson Title: Colored Paper Lesson Overview: Students will work with ice cubes and different colored paper to develop observations that prove energy can be transferred from the paper to the ice cube. Materials Needed: ØBlack, White, Red, Yellow, Green, Purple 3” x 3” construction paper ØBlack, White, Red, Yellow, Green, Purple 1” x 1” construction paper squares ØHeat ØIce Lamps (1 per group) Cubes (6 per group) ØThermometers (1 per group) squares
Engage Ask questions relating to heat and energy. How does energy transfer? How do we change temperature? What forms of energy are there? Show youtube video “The Heat Energy Song” https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=kh. Zrs-UBq 28
Explore Have the students get into groups of two or three. Give each group six different sheets of colored 3 in by 3 in sheets of paper (white, black, green, red, violet, yellow) and six small ice cubes. Ask them to work together to predict which type of paper will cause the ice cube to melt the quickest. The students then set their paper under heat lamps or in the sun and put an ice cube on each sheet. Students record their observations on paper or in their science notebooks.
Explain Go over results with students What color paper melted the ice the fastest? Why? What colored paper took the longest? Go over Visible Light Spectrum Discuss Light and absorption with Visible Spectrum
Elaborate After discussing the information above, the students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge to discover how light energy can be transferred into heat energy. The students then experiment with their colored sheets of paper and thermometers to discover the transfer of energy. Second Activity Give students same colored paper in 1 x 1 in. squares Have them predict which will be warmest and coolest Put under the light source and let warm for 15 minutes Use Thermometers to measure the temperature of the pieces of colored paper Discuss results as a class.
Evaluate The students will write a 2 paragraph reflection on their experiments from today and explain why it was possible for ice cube to melt, and where the energy came from to melt the ice cube inside their science notebook.
