TIMSS 2023 Item Writing Begins • More than 100 item writers registered!! • Challenges – Collaborative environment to recreate in-person item-writing workshop – Virtual setting and personal preferences of writers ► Small Breakout Rooms by subject specialization with group objectives

Item Writing Goals • Goals are set for each Breakout Room • Each Breakout Room should aim to write 2 -4 items for each bulleted topic (Mathematics) or objective (Science) • Topics or objectives for each Breakout Room are listed by meeting day – The list of Breakout Room assignments and lists of topics/objectives is included in the meeting materials

Item Writing Goals Mathematics Example – Room 4 (6 Item Writers) • At the end of Wednesday, Room 4 as a group should have 2 -4 items for each topic in Whole Number • At the end of Thursday, the group should have 2 -4 items for each of these topics • At the end of Friday, the group should have 2 -4 items for each of these topics

Item Writing Goals Science Example – Room 13 (7 Item Writers) • At the end of Wednesday, Room 13 as a group should have 2 -4 items for each Life Science objective • At the end of Thursday, the group should have 2 -4 items for each of these Physical Science objectives • At the end of Friday, the group should have 2 -4 items for each of these Earth Science objectives

Working with Your Team • Review items within the group before you submit them • Share works in progress • Discuss issues with your group • Zoom Breakout Room collaboration tools – Refer to NRC Zoom Meeting Participation Guidelines, p. 2 -3 – Screen sharing – Private and Breakout Room chat – Document share via chat

Assistance During Item Writing • Regular Visits – Starting after the first break each day, we will visit Breakout Rooms regularly • Call for Assistance – Click “Ask for Help” and we will come to the Breakout Room when we are available – Click “Leave Breakout Room” to go back to the main meeting and ask for assistance • Email – Send questions or concerns to timss@bc. edu. Note that it may take us some time to reply
