Strath Haven Middle School Day of Service January 12, 2018
Welcome to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service January 12, 2018
Morning Activity Videos: Choose one of the two videos to show as an introduction to MLK’s life. They are similar in content and each one is about 5 minutes, but they differ in presentation. This could be a good start for a little background discussion on his role in American history and why we celebrate his life.
Morning Activity List 1. Decorate a lunch bags for homeless and send to Room 231 when finished so we can get them ready for packaging. Some students can do more than one so we will have enough for all our recipients. 2. A Letter to Breast Cancer patients (pink lined paper) **see website for ideas and suggestions(guidelines) Click here for more information 3. A Letter to nursing home residents (green lined paper) **see next page for ideas and sample 4. A Letter of appreciation and support to soldiers that are working to protect our country(yellow lined paper). Click link for suggestions and pictures. https: //www. operationgratitude. com/writeletters/ 5. AIM plarn messages for blessing bags (see slide 7)
Letters to Nursing Home Residents These letters will be delivered to someone in a nursing home that is not getting mail from family or friends. Your kind words and thoughts mean so much to people that do not have visitors or communication with outside people. Even though you do not personally know them, many of these residents treasure and keep letters from students. Write personal letter neatly on the green paper. Feel free to add a drawing or create a decorative border. Elderly people love to receive pictures that children create. Tell them about your hobbies, what you are learning in school, things you enjoy doing during the winter, ect…. Avoid discussing their situation, age or medical condition. Keep it light and fun. Here is part of a sample letter to help get you started: Dear Friend, I am a middle school student at Strath Haven. I like to spend my free time………. . I have two sisters and a dog. My dog’s name is Fido. He is crazy, but lovable. He loves to take walks, eat from the garbage can and chase squirrels. In school, we are learning about ……. . , My favorite subject is …. . because ……… I am hoping for a snow day soon. Although the winter is cold, it is fun to sled on the big hill at our high school. Snow is also so pretty. I love to look out the window and see how the environment changes when it is covered in white. I hope you will also enjoy the winter snow. Thinking of you, , First name only Strath Haven Middle School
Encouragement Notes- In addition to creating plarn mats for the homeless in another station, students will gain empathy for those who are homeless and affected by addiction by creating “encouragement notes” for our AIM's blessing bags. AIM(Angels in Motion) distributes hundreds of these bags weekly on the streets; the bags include 7 snacks, a beverage, a resource flyer with AIM’s phone number for help, and a simple note of encouragement which we prefer to have done by children (but we often run out!). I’ve attached a picture of some samples. Individuals who have received these blessing bags often say that it is the encouragement notes that have meant the most to them.
