Important Vocabulary • Polis – geographic and political center of Greek life. The CITY CENTER. • Acropolis – a fortified hill. • Agora – the marketplace, would compare to a mall, flea market, etc. today

Greek City States The Good of the Polis above everything else! • What are the duties of all citizens of Greek City States? • Vote (in Athens) • Defend the Polis • Take part in Government
Spartan Values Sparta was a polis that valued physical courage, strength, and bravery in war militaristic values. Children of citizens were raised to be "Spartan", taught to get along with almost nothing. Spartans deprived themselves of any luxuries. Their basic food meal was black bean broth. Although citizens complimented it with the monthly quota of items from the farms.
The Agoge • Education and training program for all male Spartans • EXCEPT: firstborn son in the ruling houses • Very difficult physically and mentally

Spartan Women • Spartan women were strong, physically and mentally • Educated and had rights (comparatively) • Physical test at 18 for full citizenship • Had to be physically fit • Were allowed to indulge in life more than the men
Spartan Women • Typically did not get married until their late 20 s • Had a “captured” marriage ceremony
Spartan Hierarchy OLIGARCHY Periocei: non-Spartans who made things the Spartans needed and brought in goods the Spartans needed Helots: conquered people who the Spartans owned as slaves, they grew all the food for the Spartans. They outnumbered the Spartans, which is why the Spartans always trained to fight
