+ Freaks and Geeks n While watching the pilot of Freaks and Geeks, we will use our sociological imagination to analyze the social behaviours in terms of n Functionalism theory n Conflict theory n Feminist theory n Symbolic Interactionist theory n Link below: n Freaks and Geeks, Episode One
+ Functional theory n What are the groups and what functions do they serve? n Are there negative influences from any of the groups (dysfunctions)? n Do the groups depend on each other? n Are there any manifest functions and latent functions?
+ Conflict Theory n Who has power in the episode? n How or why do they have power? n n How do they use it? What is the scarce resource they struggle for?
+ Symbolic Interactionist What are the important symbols in the episode? Note that the symbols might be an object, but also might be an idea, an event or something else. How do groups show they belong? (Jokes, clothing, etc. ) What happens when a character tries to change social groups? How do the characters act based on the symbols they find important?
+ Feminist Theory n How do the girls “behave” in the episode? n Is being female portrayed as a negative or a positive? n Do the girls fulfill any pre-determined gender roles or expectations? What happens when they don’t? n Do you observe the female characters making choices that seem gender based?
+ Freaks and Geeks n Take notes as you watch. n Submit a two page response in which you detail your sociological observations through THREE of theories (Functionalism, Conflict, Symbolic Interactionism and Feminism) of the episode. Remember, this is not a PERSONAL response, but an ACADEMIC response using the language of sociology to explain observable behaviour. n Follow APA format guidelines – font size 12 Times New Roman, double spaced, cover page, Headings in bold, Introduction and Conclusion.
