Sociology And demography are both interested in social change How populations change, how societies evolve new social norms, social structures, and cultures Many causes of social change Technology, ideologies, geographic/physical change
Social movements Arises from discontent w/ some aspect of society Intend to address social problem & create social change MADD arose from “lenient” drunk driving laws Organize to promote or resist social change Proactive social movements Reactive social movements

Alterative social movements Want to alter a specific behavior Generally believe that this certain behavior is at the root of a range of social problems Women’s Christian Temperance Union Targets the individual and wants partial change http: //www. wctu. org/
Redemptive Social Movements Target individuals but want total change Religious social movements (such as conversion to Christianity or Buddhism) Not just supposed to stop lying, for example, but the whole person is supposed to change Live like Christ or by the Four Noble Truths
Reformative social movements Targets society and wants partial change Wants to reform a certain behavior Animal rights activists want to change society’s treatment of animals PETA
Transformative Social Movements Targets society but wants a total change Want to transform the whole social order French Revolution, Russian Revolution, American Revolution, Cuban Revolution
Transnational Social Movement Targets global/international relations and wants partial change Tend to focus on quality of life issues Feminist/women’s movement has taken on female infanticide and female genital mutiliation AKA “new social movements”
Metaformative Social Movements Targets the globe and wants total change Class, gender, politics/government, religion, family…. every aspect across the world Very rare with only 3 examples Early 20 th c Communist Social Movement (The Communist International) Fascism Islamic Fundamentalism
