EU-TP 2286 RSMP NORDIC protocol for traffic management Speaker Name Martin Kaliszczuk Danish Road Directorate
Agenda • • RSMP-Nordic Demand for a new protocol Public made for public use Open source Organisation setup Development Using RSMP (Mobi. Maestro) in dynamic traffic control, vms boards etc. Future plans
RSMP-Nordic • Originally started by Trafikverket 2009 (Swedish Road Authority), to replace the Ericcson 501 protocol which was no longer maintained. • The purpose of this protocol is to create a standardized way to communicate between systems at the local level and systems at the regional level regardless of supplier and technology. • The protocol consists of 2 components, core and SXL (signal exchange list) which is unique for each type of equipment. The core being the container ”language” and the SXL the message for the Equipment. • Protocol has changed from XML to JSON (lighter data load). • Currently the project involves 4 key partners, Trafikverket from Sweden, Danish Road Directorate, City of Copenhagen and City of Stockholm which are using the RSMP protocol in their roadside units.
Demand for a new protocol. • Using proprietary licensed protocols, was a standard for a long time and this restricted the number of suppliers due to vendor lock-in and limited the competition. • The challenge of having vendor lock ins and using multiple suppliers. The aim is to further develop the RSMP communication protocol which will be independent of vendors. • The goal is to be able to easily add and remove signals in new facilities and applications without having to expand or change the standards and guidelines. • EU funded project through Inter-reg, with key participants from Denmark and Sweden. • European regional standard. (CEN/CENELEC)
Public made for public use • The aim is to create a common communication standard for the Scandinavian countries, which will be open source and therefore free to use for all. • Unifying different vendors equipment to 1 surveilance system instead of 5 and freedom to use different equipment. This will give more freedom to conduct traffic management with all systems unified and using a common protocol to communicate. • Increased competition leads to more innovation. • Vendors role in the RSMP-Nordic.
Open source • Open source based protocol which is open to all vendors hence there are no trade barriers, enhance interoperability amongst different suppliers of roadside equipment. • Core and SXL. • MIT & BSD-2

Development. • Simulator tool written in c# on the way to be released as open source. • Building blocks for further development (”Android” for roadside equipment, can also include older and more simple equipment like Arduino). • V 2 X compatibility.
Implementation and use of RSMP today • Mobi. Maestro traffic management system which is based on RSMP, and used in the city of Copenhagen. • Implemented in the cities Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden. • La Semaforica from Italy have implemented RSMP, in their traffic light controller along with Dynniq and Swarco. • VI-sense sensor network calculates speed and amount of cyclist to calculate the optimal route based on speed and congestion on the bike path. • Supports traffic data collection. • Time to green (C-Mob. ILE).
Measuring bicycle congestion. RSMP is amongst other things used to monitor congestion on the bike paths. This is done through a sensor network that calculates speed and congestion on the sections ahead to give information about the most appropriate route to take.
Using RSMP to directly connect units to master system, in a mixed vendor environment. Traffic Control center with RSMP Traffic Control center Proprietary systems 1 2 3 4 5
Mobi. Maestro Trafficmanagement One system connecting the different roadside units through RSMP. Travel time and VMS signs Can use VMS signs dynamically to show travel times and best routes.
Future plans • The protocol is under perpetual development since the demands of ITS systems are also increasing. • The RSMP-Nordic protocol work as a container for the different types of roadside equipment which have their own SXL and in that way have specific messages for each type of equipment. • Programming tool (LISA+ compatibility) maybe in the future. • Tools for automated tests using JSON Schema. • Ruby/Rspec test suite. • New SXL for VMS, counting stations and simple Equipment.
