Self Directed Support and information on your options. The Scottish Government made a new law about how you choose your support.

What is self directed support? Self directed support is for people who get support that social work pay for. Self directed support helps people to have better lives. It makes sure that people have the same freedom and choices. People get support when they need it. People plan for the future. They can plan for emergencies.

This is how to get support through self directed support: Tell someone from the Learning Disability Service that you want to talk about self directed support. Someone from the Learning Disability Service will do an assessment with you. You say what support you think you need. We will tell you how much money you can spend on support. This is a guide to help you plan. This is called an estimated budget.

You will get help to make a support plan. This will include: • what works for you • what is important to you • what you want to do • what could be better • what support you need.

You tell your care manager if you want to arrange your support. You tell your care manager if you want someone else to arrange your support. Your care manager will give you information to help you choose your support. Friends and family and advocacy workers can help with your support plan.

Your care manager must agree your support plan before your support starts. Budget Your care manager will tell you how much your support costs. This is called your individual budget. There are 4 options for self directed support. You can choose to have choice and control over your care and support. You can leave most of the decisions to your care manager. You can have a mix of 3.

Option 1 – Direct Payment This option gives you the most choice and control. You are responsible for arranging your own support. The council will tell you how much money you can spend on your support. You manage your individual budget. You employ your own staff. You can buy a service from a service provider. There are people that can help you with this. You can get as much help as you need.

Option 2 – Individual Service Fund This option gives you some choice and control. You do not have to manage the budget. The council will tell you how much money you can spend on your support. You choose a service provider for your support. Your care manager arranges for your service provider to be paid. The service provider will work with you to achieve things in your support plan.

Option 3 – Social Work Managed You have less choice and control over your support. The council tell you how much money can be spent on your support. You ask your care manager to choose your support. Your care manager arranges the support that is right for you.

Option 4 – a mixture of options The council will tell you how much money can be spent on your support. You choose and control some parts of your support but not other parts. You will choose support as a mixture of option 1, option 2 and option 3 for your support. Your care manager will choose some parts of your support for you.

Reviewing your support Your care manager will arrange a review. Your care manager wants to know if your support is working well for you. Your support can stay the same or you can ask for it to change. Contact us If you have any questions speak to your care manager or contact us.
